Fireproof glass blocks

Information

Fire-resistant glass blocks are commonly used as partitions in public assembly areas, stairwells or other escape routes or in walls adjacent to other buildings.

Glass blocks are distinguished on the basis of their behaviour in the event of fire according to the following criteria:

α) integrity: (a) the following criteria shall be applied Integrity (integrity) is the time between exposure to fire and the appearance of cracks and destabilisation of the glass block wall. The symbols used are usually E or G. Thus a glass block of class E60 will remain intact for at least 60 minutes.

(b) Thermal insulation. This is the time from the moment of exposure to fire until heat penetrates the glass block, which may result in ignition of objects in the room where fire has not yet occurred. The symbols used are usually F or EW or EI. Thus a glass block of class F60 will prevent heat transmission for at least 60 minutes.

The European regulation defining the above specifications is EN 1364-1

Attention : in addition to the glass blocks, their construction must also be done according to specific specifications in order for the wall to offer the safety and protection required.
